The sixteenth installment in the series tells the story of Shunji, a seventeen-year-old girl who shows up at Torajiros home claiming that he is her father. Fortunately, Torajiro has just returned home to Shibamata, allowing him to clear up the misunderstanding. It turns out that over a decade ago in Yamagata Prefecture, Torajiro, in dire straits and suffering from hunger and cold, received a warm meal from a young woman named Ayame. Grateful for her kindness, Torajiro has been sending her money every year since. However, Shunji misunderstands this gesture as proof that Torajiro is her father. Upon learning from Shunji that Ayame passed away last year, Torajiro is heartbroken and decides to visit Yamagata Prefecture to pay his respects at her gravesite. He discovers that Ayame had lamented her lack of education which led her to be deceived by men and suffer throughout her life. Touched by her story, Torajiro resolves to pursue education and better himself. Back home in Shibamata, Torajiro encounters a graduate student of archaeology named Reiko. Seeing an opportunity, Torajiro decides to learn from this beautiful woman. However, Reiko is closely associated with a university professor who is knowledgeable and adventurous and secretly admires her...Torajiro faces a formidable rival in the world of romance.This episode delves into Torajiros past and the impact of a kind gesture on his life.
